Most of us can’t imagine the day without black coffee. Especially on a loooong Monday. But if you drink your coffee on an empty stomach, we have bad news for you – you shouldn’t.
There’s no doubt that coffee brings many benefits to your body, but you shouldn’t drink it in the morning on an empty stomach.
Drinking coffee releases hydrochloric acid in your digestive tract. This hydrochloric acid violates the food in your stomach and it can cause problems with digestion – difficulties with protein digestion. When you have proteins that are not fully decomposed that leads to other problems such as bloating and irritation.
Many experts and doctors warn that coffee should never be consumed in the morning, right after you wake up. Coffee increases the level of cortisol and the body needs 2-3 hours to return to its normal state. Cortisol is a hormone that controls our biological clock and the ability to stay awake. Moreover, drinking coffee on an empty stomach will increase the level of acid and it can lead to vomiting and bloating.
The conclusion is: You CAN and SHOULD drink coffee an hour or two after waking up. That means that you should have breakfast before, even if it’s only a slice of bread or a fruit.
